Throughout June, West Suffolk DRC held two events to raise the awareness of both falls prevention and National Carers Week.

Kevin Waddell, Centre Manager at WSDRC, tells us of the successful events:

Falls Awareness Event "Positive Steps"

The sun shone and 30 people came to see what we had going on.

It was encouraging to see that both the general public and clinicians found the open day useful and beneficial and were happy to attend to gather information.

The aim of the day was to inform people about falls and fracture prevention risks, give out information, signpost to identified services, offer walking aid MOT's, refer people to falls and fracture management and intervention services and offer opportunities to participate in exercise e.g. chair based exercise and Tai Chi.

A big thank you to the organisations that attended including:

  • The Stroke Association
  • Community Meals on Wheels Service
  • The Parkinson Disease Association

The volunteer bureau transport service (kindly funded by St Edmundsbury Council) brought people in from several sheltered housing schemes.

National Carers Week at the West Suffolk Disability Resource Centre

This was our way of showing appreciation to all the carers out there and the fantastic work they do.

A great day was had by all, we were supported by information stands from local organisations that were able to offer information advice and guidance to those who visited and to each other, including:

  • Age UK
  • Suffolk Family Carers
  • Suffolk Information Link

The main host was Crossroads Care who were very helpful with setting everything up and getting it advertised.

Tesco generously donated 25 Bottles of Bubble Bath for the Carers, and sent along their local Community Champion to find out more of the service we provide. Waitrose also donated a voucher to fund refreshments for the day.

Here are some comments from both days:

"What a good idea - I didn't know this building had so much to offer"
"Could we do this again?"
"I have really enjoyed myself. I came to try the Tai Chi but have found that the Disability Centre has so much useful information on offer"
"I never leave here without a new piece of information"
"A day to celebrate the work of carers and provide additional information"
